Truth is lead singer of ‘The Gossip’, Beth Ditto, makes a bigger impact sitting down via her attitude, writing and media savvy than her (let’s be honest)… meh, music. As if to prove the point, today you can’t move far in London without seeing her nakedness on the cover of NME. It’s memorable.
Is this a healthy ideal we should be presenting as desirable to our vulnerable youth? (THE CHILDREN! WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?) Are her hairy armpits sexier when you know she doesn’t wear deodorant because “…punks are supposed to smell…”? Should someone tell her punk was over in 1978?
Who cares? Fat fuckers Chubby chasers start your engines and kiss her ass (there’s room for everyone).
So, ummm, how do you really feel about her?
Chubbies, body hair and smell were aways part of punk. And as you’ll realize if you actually think about it, the “music” always had to be placed inside quotation marks. Anybody remember The Sex Pistols?
I think punk will always surface when mainstream music gets too Britneyed out.
All that aside, she just doesn’t really ring my bells, and I’m one of thise FF’ers you mentioned. As an old punk, I’ll stick to Souxie and Lene Lovich.
Chris - I think she’s a master media manipulator and I think her band’s somewhat overrated. It’s okay to call a fat person fat though isn’t it?
Marcus - I agree, though the Pistols had bigger tunes than many of their contemporaries. Punk’s not an alternative to anything anymore. Green Day? Please.
Souxie could hardly have been any hotter…
Absolutely, Sam.
