I count myself lucky that I have parents and a spouse, and friends who don't care (and are even supportive) about the part of my life run under a pseudonym (or nomme de arte if I am feeling pretentious). But there are more reasons to work under a different name than that.

I also have a day job, and do consulting on the side. When someone Googles for my real name, I want them to focus on my role as a technologist, and expert on effectively managing outsourced teams. At the same time when someone knows me as Quinn Retromodernist, I want them to focus on the work I do under that name.

And still there is this hanging sword. What if I am outed? Would it affect my life? Would my day job support me or not? etc etc?

But it also seems like there is this underlying issue: My real name isn't any of your business, unless I choose to tell it to you, or I am committing fraud under an alias. It's for this reason (and the worry of attached stigma) and I am disturbed by the outing of Ms Lee, and for the disturbing trend of Wikipedia articles on porn stars to contain their real name.

A case can be made that these are facts and fall within a journalist's pervue, but I also fail to see how they are relevant to the topics discussed. It just seems damned rude...
