This week sluts and whores (edited for your pleasure, read it all here.)

Why do porn actresses refer to themselves as “sluts” or “whores” Is it simply a case of doing it for the camera? Thing is, many seem to do it even off camera e.g. the female-owned company Slut Werkz.Surely this kind of thing just encourages men to also refer to them as sluts and whores? I checked out JM Productions’ website and I really didn’t like the way the girls were degraded by being called stupid and having no dignity. Instead of having “stars” or “actresses” on the so-called “biographies” they have “whores”

Why? Part of it is selling the part. Guys want porn stars that are whole hearted about it. I imagine some want porn stars that are forced into it, but that is another issue. Another is taking control of a word.gia jordan
Gosh, Ryan81. You act like being a slut or a whore’s a bad thingthreesomebody
Yeah, no kidding Ryan. Keep in mind, it’s never the sluts and whores that are getting sacrificed into volcanos and the like. They are too valuable to their villages.AztecGold11
I think that this is like black men/women calling each other “nigga”-normally a taboo word.I worked with a black male nurse who used it all the time.

Or gay people calling themselves fag or sissy. Its a way to deal with derogatory terms.
If a porn actress calls herself slut the term looses some of its derogatory power.
This doesn’t mean producers or companies shall call them sluts. If Max (Hardcore) calls a girl slut its derogatory if a girl calls herself slut its fine.Ryan81

In porn we don’t take offence to it I suppose it’s just part of the job description.gia Jordan

I know that they are almost exclusively used when referring to females but Rocco and Nacho can also be called “whores” because they have sex for money.Loosen up, Ryan. It’s called sarcasm and humour. Not everything regarding getting my holes stuffed has to be ladylike.

sort of a silly topic. i mean, people having sex with strangers for money? what would you call them? sluts? whores?i don’t see anything wrong with being a slut or whore as long as it’s consensual sex and no one is getting hurt or being forced to do anyhting they don’t want.
i don’t feel the word slut or whore is a negative term. i like girls who are sluts. i enjoy watching them have sex. it’s all good!

It all depends how it is used. As long as people use the word to put down girls and not to positively describe a girl’s widespread sexual energy, the word “slut” will always sound offensive. We need to use the word in a positive way and stop using it to put down the very same women we yearn for. If guys can be proud “players” then girls can be proud “sluts.”But one problem is admittance. Many girls who are sluts won’t admit to it probably because they are embarrassed. But god knows men love it! We love it when girls are sluts. That is what we want and that is what we love! Girls should display their SLUT badges proudly because that is what we look for when we want to have fun!

Watch Kelly Wells and Brandon Iron in 50 to 1 #3 for a possible answer. She says that she needs to be slapped around because it teaches her about self-worth. Heard it before, but to actually hear Kelly say it caught me off-guard – 1st hand wisdom rather than passed on pearls of wisdom is always more persuasive.Derek117
Some porn actresses do use “sluts” and “whores” to describe themselves. Others don’t.The idea behind this self-degradation is suppose to be to “take the sting out” of others, in the non-porn world, using these terms against female porn performers. [Hey, why don't the guys publicly call themselves "degenerate losers"?]
Anyway, as those of you who stayed awake during Sociology 101, or who may have lived in a black neighborhood can attest, back-in-the-day many Blacks used the “N” word in greeting each–justifying their behavior by saying it renders the racist insult meaningless. Today, with the exception of gangsta rappers, using the “N” word isn’t viewed as acceptable in the Black Community.
As more confident women enter porn (remember most porn girls are 18 or 19 years old), calling herself a “slut” and “whore” will, also, become less prevalent. The girls’ inner confidence will be enough to “protect” her from outside insults–and “beating the Insulter to the punch” won’t be necessary.
Sorry…I not only stayed awake in class, but now I teach it.

I don’t like it when porn stars are referred to as sluts or whores. I figured that it’s supposed to be somewhat humorous when it’s on a boxcover, but I think it those terms are degrading, which porn itself is not.Pagoda
I think those terms have an ugly connotation, especially to Americans. Prostitution and promiscuity have been condemned since day one, and they still are. Women that participate in either activity are vilified, and these terms have traditionally been used in a vicious way. This could change within a couple generations, though. The sexually-active teen girl of today is very different from when I was going to school. Back then, a girl was considered a slut (which was bad) if she slept with lots of guys, or if she was indescriminate about who she had sex with. We’d progressed to the point where a girl wasn’t considered slutty just because she was sexually active. It was okay if she did it with her boyfriend, particularly if they were known as a couple by everybody. It was the girl that simply wanted to fuck, and didn’t care who, that was the slut.
Anything to add sluts?

I would wholeheartedly agree that being sexually free and open is not necessarily a negative trait at all, however I disagree with most of what is said in defense of adult entertainers using the terms “slut” and “whore” to describe themselves.
Words are just symbols or placeholders for meaning. In the exchange of ideas there are two parts: the intent of the speaker and the perceived intent of the listener. This relationship is what defines a word at that exact temporal moment.
Sure plenty of black American’s have attempted to use the word “nigger” or “nigga” to remove the racist and demeaning definition of the world from modern culture. The point is that this only works within a certain social context. Two black guys [or girls] without intent to insult could use _any_ term to symbolize fellowship. The moment that the intent is different, regardless or race, society, or anything: as long as the listener understands a negative intent by the speaker the word becomes insulting.
Although most people with darker skin may not approve of a white suburban kid calling the nigger to their faces, so long as the kid had no intention of offense I would think his mistake would yield a soft punishment. But if even a popular black person would be wear a KKK outfit and venomously call a friend a nigger, it would not be any less offensive from the mouth of a white kid.
So I don’t see how using the term “slut” as a positive decreases its sting when a self-righteous prude yells it at a porn star with the intent to insult and degrade.
It isn’t about the definition of the words that are said but more about the intent of what they were meant to represent.
I guess it is all about context.
“Girls should display their SLUT badges proudly because that is what we look for when we want to have fun!” -Exactly; it’s an advertising term, a trigger word that elicits a very specific, immediate *cough* response in guys. It’s kind of sad that the only real, generally recognized term we have for a down ‘n’ dirty, uninhibited, brazenly sexual girl is slut.
Sure, you can go on and write out all that rather than use the word slut. In my experience the response is less intense and the text won’t pull the same unless it’s to a very specialized (or more reserved) audience.
Personally I don’t like to use slut and whore interchangeably either – one’s a hobby, the other’s a profession. (I’d rather be a whore; good stockings don’t come cheap.) And that also might have something to do with it; subconsciously, using the word slut (that implies doing it for free) works with the whole “we do it for the love, not the money” image. When playing up the “will do anything for money” idea, the word whore works better, etc.
Sure, there are guys that like classy ladies in their porn, but they’re also of a different sexual mindset. The slut/whore language works pretty well for the people it’s intended to reach. I think part of the problem is the lack of strong trigger words for the people it doesn’t do anything for. I also think part of the problem is that not enough adult marketers and affiliate marketers have backgrounds in talking/writing dirty.
Only non-Black people who believe there is something hip or feel there’s some sort of popular social cachet to gain by having the freedom to say “nigga” without being knuckle sandwiched in the lips think there’s something positive about the so-called reappropriation of the word “nigger.”
And Black people who continue to use it in laziness or in the name of “brotherhood” exemplify the root meaning of the word…thus the ones who GAVE it to them originally in all their racial superiority are completely justified in their legacy since the chattel have been mentally subjugated into thinking there’s anything “good” in its usage or permutations of spelling…people, get a fucking clue! A shit-covered rose is still a shit-covered rose in the end!
I personally don’t like those terms. I find them to be a turn off.
This discussion has inspired a long post of my own about why I don’t find “slut” or “whore” appealing.
http://www.msnaughty.com/blog/2006/06/01/slut-whore-bitch-the-language-of-porn/
I guess a summary of that is: I just don’t find those words to be sexy because all I see is derision. Hatred is not a turn on for me. I don’t feel the need to dislike the people who are making me aroused
I see nothing wrong with women in porn self-labelling as whores, for whatever reason. I don’t like it when other people are doing the labelling for us.
I don’t have a problem using the words among my friends and fellow sex workers and poly minded folks, but I do not use it in my marketing materials for my website content. Even with people who are fans of porn the stigma attached to these words is so strong. It is laced with judgment at best. I try to use sex and female (and male as well) positive terminology as much as possible instead.
This slut/whore thing has been bothering me too. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Some porn sites and phone sex places refer to the women as Goddesses or ladies which just feels just much better for me.
At the same time if a woman wants to self identify as a slut or whore that doesn’t irk me. It’s the negative intent of the name callers that is so troublesome.
Adele, Seska, Vixen – I wish there was more middle ground. I’ve never been with a woman I would describe as a slut, nor a goddess. It’s very reductive. What about women and why do we have to extrapolate sexuality to character – are bedroom submissives submissive? DO swingers lead adventurous lives outside the bedroom? I think not…
