Update: Two links fixed (3:02 p.m. PST)
Now Sam, with the [insert new word for it here] growing and growing, there should be a limit for participants each week.
There were 24 members this week. This takes a lot of space in the blogs. I already changed the line spacing from 2.2em to 1em.
In my opinion, 20 links per bloggasm is the uppermost limit!
nah this is growing lets see how big it gets
Pornster - I disagree. Scrolling past links takes a second. There’s nothing being lossed but, with more eyeballs and more interest, a lot to gain.
You could, like me, place the links in your sidebar. Or place the first 20 links on the homepage and then use (more…) to reveal the rest.
This idea is supposed to get bigger, stronger and more powerful the more people become involved.
I am going to start ordering the links more randomly (but using a system that people can see is fair) in order to make sure that peoples position on the list isn’t costing them attention.
How do you get added to the bloggasm report? or at least considered?
Sam, somethin is wrong with my the link to my site, it keeps showing up as an email link, just letting you know so you can fix it, thanks.
Sweet
I’m with Sam… I think the strength of the Boggasm is exactly in it’s numbers. What you need to remember, Pornster, is that for each link you add, you’re adding another link to your own blog in reciprocation. So the more participants we get, the stronger your blog will feature in Technorati (so long as they don’t decide that it constitutes unfair pay or something).
A good randomizing technique does seem like it will come in handy. Most people will probably click only the links with the best headlines, or the ones at the top as the list grows longer.
Sam: is it fair game to bury some links in the extended post? It seems like moving the links to the sidebar is a better way to keep a blog from being too text-heavy without being unfair to part of the list. That was my initial approach, but I then decided that it was just a hair easier to post the list as an entry to the blog (yeah, *one* hair exactly). But at the point when 50 or 100 or more links come in each week, I think I’d definitey go back to the sidebar model.
When this thing gets as big as 50 or 100 posts, I’ll definitely not participate in it, unless I find a good solution for the space problem.
BadAss’ blog looks like mine right now: the bloggasm fills the whole page. Considering the very graphical nature of my blog, this is suboptimal. And what will your sidebar look like with 100 links in it? I already have too many links in my sidebar…
One solution could be scrolling lists either in the sidebar or the post.
But I, like BadAss, don’t like the idea of part of the bloggasm being cut off. And, personally, I would never scroll down in such a list when I surf the web.
Scrolling lists are certainly kind of cool looking, but I don’t know how many people would really scroll them… And there’s also the issue that a lot of blogging platforms won’t support them.
Perhaps the question really boils down to whether we, as participants, are more interested in being read or linked to. Obviously, in an optimal world the answer is both. But I think if I were to *choose* I’d say that the links are more valuable because they increase the chances of my blog being read by people who haven’t ever even seen the bloggasm (via technorati and other search).
At present, I couldn’t be happier with bloggasm. It accounts for a huge percentage of my traffic (even more than I got from being featured on boing boing or fleshbot). So I’ll definitely continue to participate, even when it reaches an unweildy number of links.
Note: in my previous comment the phrase “unfair pay” is a typo… I meant to write “unfair play.” Same difference, kind of, but not. (wow, I’m channeling a myspace user or something. heh.)
I think these scroll lists look kind of crappy. But they are the only way I see for now if the link numbers increases even further.
And I see the roll of the bloggasm differently. Sam himself says it’s the “very best of the sexblogs”. In my opinion a moderation would be a good idea. Newcomers can have a chance, and you increase your links anyway with a participation in bloggasm, since you get more readers through it.
It’s interesting that the bloggasm brings you, BadAss, such high amounts of traffic. I don’t see these effects in my stats. The entry at fleshbot was far more rewarding.
Just so you know, the whatsexmaycome.blogspot.com link is a mailto.
I figure that I wont always have a good story to post but I will post the bloggasm so sometimes it wont always be as ig if lots of people do that. it can if it gets too big be posted in a twice weekly thing. same deadline just post half sat and half hump day
Pornster: actually, Sam says “The best of the sex(y) blogs, by the bloggers who write them” as in, self-selected. We do have a “cop” now, but still haven’t elected a critic. If you want to moderate content maybe you should start your own list?
There’s room for at least two, don’t you think? I’ll submit to yours too, and you can choose to accept or decline as suits you.
Okay, I’m gonna shut up now until the whiskey wears off. It must be about time to crawl in bed.
