Pornographers Beat Off Attorney General Gonzales

The government is reminded, yet again, that the first amendment trumps suburban morality.

These burn fantastically well.

The Free Speech Coalition have won the adult industry a reprieve regarding the new 2257 record keeping requirements that were due to take effect this week, securing an injunction until September 7th.

I predict it’s the first step toward significantly knocking back the Attorney General’s attempt to step on America’s appetite for sex.

I’m amazed that the administration has tried such a crude attack on the adult industry. Despite the Republican’s being the best-organized political machine in America, their extreme right-wing (a bunch of very scary people) can’t resist trying to legislate morality. The record keeping requirements they’re pushing for are so ludicrous that any reasonable judge will have to see them for what they are - an attempt to make selling sexual material impossible. That’ll fall under the free-speech hammer as it always does.

Overstepping the mark is the same mistake they made when trying to ban dilation and extraction abortions, drafting laws that said even if a mother would die otherwise she could not choose to have the procedure.

Hopefully the current battle will set precedents which make it harder than ever to present sexually explicit material, or the people involved in its production, as somehow criminal.

(NB - A clever, concise and punchy look at the insanity of the new 2257 proposals can be found here - thanks Fleshbot).

This is great news. The new 2257 regulation do very little to actually protect. Why? because child pornographers will ignore the law anyway.
